From My Mentee

I would like to welcome Rebecca Stockton, a gifted Senior here in San Antonio. Rebecca  is interested in becoming a writer and will be my mentee (a term that, until my introduction to the mentoring program, I had neither heard used nor seen in print) for the 09-10 school year.

This will be the home of Rebecca's thoughts about writing, her experiences as a mentee (there's that word again) as well a place for her to post anything else of interest. Check here often as I plan to keep her busy for the next year. Moohahaha.

As part of ISM I have to have a final product that proves I learned something from the class. Because I am studing writing I am writing a novel, or a third of one any way. And I've discovered something. It's hard.

The thought that on half of my one third has to be completed by the end of Feb. is a little scary, or rather a lot scary. I have never done so much prep work for anything in my life. The outline for the first third of this novel is six pages long, and that's the general out line, not the chapter outline. the chapter outline promises to be even longer. But I can do this.

Its weird knowing that by the time this is over I'll have written the beginning of a novel. I already feel like I've accomplished something just having this much finished and nothing actually written. Well, I have the first sentence: There's something about Central Park.

Okay so its been a few days, or weeks. That's the thing about December, its busy. I am currently working on my portfolio, or rather I should be working, rather than blogging. but I thought I should get on and blog again.

I discovered something today. I was in need of one more thing to go in my portfolio. So I wrote a poem about a Christmas tradtion that my family has. As I was saving it into my computer I found out I had already written one, and the two were almost identical. A note to all forgetful people, read your stuff every now and again, that way you don't do something twice.

I'm finally blogging! For anyone whose on this site often you're probably wondering what took me so long. Well, school mostly. But now I can blog for school! Why? Becasue of ISM, the class I'm taking to study writing.

I know, you have no idea what that is. I'll explain. ISM stands for Independent Study Mentorship. This is a class for juniors and seniors in high school to explore subject that they may not otherwise study in school. Each student chooses a subject, they range from Aeronautical Engineering to writing to comedy. Then our wonderful teacher helps us hunt down a mentor in our field. our mentors tend to be experienced professionals in their field, who are willing to take a novice teenager under their wing. Lots of people run in terror. Luckily for me, Mr. McAuley is not one of those people. So I have a wonderful experienced mentor and he has an absent-minded mentee. ( I use this word solely to annoy him.) As a part of ISM we produce a final product. What's mine? Not sure, It's a long story.

I wanted to write a novel. That was a little bit ambicious. I hope to have an amazing short story or an amazing short comic. Yes, a comic. That actually invovles more writing than you think. A lot of the same skills are used. I started the year with an idea for a product revolving around the King Arthur Legends. As much as I love King Arthur this involves more research than I was ready for. I'll come back to that when I don't have to balance school and research. Right now I'm working on a funny story about time travel and dragons. Keep an eye out for it in the future!
